MY WEEK IN PHOTOS: SEPTEMBER 24–30, 2018! (SAN DIEGO MUSEUMS AND DISNEY HALLOWEEN)
Celebrating Kiki’s birthday, continuing to pack up the apartment, a work day trip to San Diego to visit a few museums, and Halloween at Disneyland.
Enjoy!
Monday night, Zach made taco soup (I guess that’s a thing? Found a recipe online).
Monday night is also pottery studio night. I’ve been trying new techniques from videos that a studio mate recommended to me, and I’ve been trying to get a tall cylinder right. It’s hard! Wish I had more time each week, but this second one is the best one I’ve made!
Secret show at the Blind Barber aka my chance to try whatever grilled cheese sandwich Mandy tries.
More cloudy and foggy mornings at work.
Been stacking up my backpack and lunch bags because I didn’t bother unloading extra boxes from my car.
It’s getting darker earlier but that means I’m usually arriving home at sunset.
Marking the day that I pulled out sweatpants to wear around the house because it was too chilly to wear shorts! Yay!
Took some blurry photos of some shisito peppers I made for dinner. Lit a candle. Wow feeling happy to be relaxing at home.
Ordered dresses online to pick out something to wear for Zach’s friend’s wedding that is coming up soon. I have been not the way I look lately, so carefully picking things to myself to wear in advance is my way to try to get excited for getting dressed up, making an effort, etc. (I decided on the green and pink one, by the way).
It’s Kiki’s birthday! I made her a little illustration of Peanut. Still waiting on an online order I placed for her gift (oops, it didn’t come in time…)
UOVO! Pasta!
Salt N’ Straw—I had coffee bourbon and as a person with a low-sweet tolerance…I really liked it.
❤ Happy Birthday, Kiki! Love you.
Off to San Diego for a work field trip.
Made it to Union Station to catch the train down to San Diego. The ride takes about 3 hours.
Views out the window on the train. The train goes right along the coast.
Made it to San Diego and encountered a new brand of ride share scooter…RAZOR! Remember them?
Walking to get tacos first thing.
Octopus ink taco! Plus others from Serrano’s Street Tacos and Bar.
First stop, San Diego Museum of Art.
I thought this was cool. This is a tiger tally made in China in the 2nd-1st century BCE. “This rare object was used as a form of identification among military officials and messengers. Messages and orders were delivered to the bearer of the matching half. The inscription begins on one side and is completed on the other: “To bestow the Magistrate of Henei, the number one tally.”
Admiring the ceramics and beautiful architecture in this space.
Contemporary Japanese stoneware
Then over to the Timken Museum of Art
Both museums are in San Diego’s Balboa Park so we walked around the grounds afterwards.
Coffee break with a pomegranate truffle cookie
Free train snacks on the way home (thanks, business class!)
Arriving in Los Angeles with some blurry sunset photos.
Zach kindly picked me up from Union Station. We went to eat some Vietnamese food at Blossom downtown.
Spicy crab and clam noodle soup
I’ve been frazzled about my skin, lots of discoloration and spots and pimples and like…dark spots that haven’t gone away? Is my skin decaying off my face…icky icky. My skin is somehow way worse now than it ever was as a teen. Taking any and all suggestions, especially for toning and skin texture for sensitive/eczema prone skin. 🙂
Walking down the hill after work. Apparently there’s a mountain lion that has been spotted around in the early morning hours. Wary of my surroundings…
Masterchef Zach made some hot wings
He loves sleeping like that, it is the cutest
Spent Friday night boxing up some more things around the apartment, so by Saturday morning there was just even more mess than before.
Pausing for another recipe shoot for the upcoming amwa cookbook. This one was especially fun to make because we had a mom cooking demo!
Then went back to the apartment and loaded up my car and Zach’s car so we could start transferring over more boxes.
End of summer grilling at Tristan’s
Burgers and so many chips and sides
Surprise birthday cake and mini celebration
Sunday, escaping responsibilities to check out Halloween time stuff at Disneyland.
Ahh, Donald and Mickey in their costumes.
I wonder who gets to hang out with the pumpkin the rest of the year when it isn’t in the park.
“Celebrating my girlfriend’s mom’s birthday” Wow you can really customize those shirts
Started the day with a grilled cheese and tomato soup, with a cookies and cream macaron and a pumpkin cheesecake
Yay! A Disney Mewtwo. I named him Mickey.
Some light Pokemon Go in Toontown.
Hidden Mickey skull and bones?
Considered purchasing these, but they were *almost* right but not quite.
Fairy Godmother and one of Cinderella’s mice friends in her little outfit
Cherry and blue raspberry slushie. It was weirdly hot.
Encounter with some Storm Troopers who were looking for some info on the Resistance
A few hours later, another slushie. This time apple flavored. Plus a garlic twisty knot. We waited for the parade to catch some shade…it was still way too hot.
I was seeing these little poison apple cauldrons around and finally caved to get one. It’s a popcorn holder but it also lights up. It’s so cuuute!
Won’t ever stop loving on my little cauldron
The sun went down but the lights came on. So beautiful!
Paint the Night parade. For children who LOVE the club lights.
Such a fun week; San Diego’s museums are so cool. Salvador Dali is an artist that has always unsettled me for some reason. I use rosewater on my face and I can report that not only is it quite soothing, it staves off breakouts. I don’t know if it would help with your eczema, however…

Ooh, rose water! Where do you buy it and how best do I apply? Thanks for the tip.

I bought mine from Target, it’s a rosewater tonic; but you can buy it pretty much anywhere. I would only apply it two or three times a week. It’s magic.

Can’t wait to see your new place come together! I have to ask where did you get that indigo rug?? I love it!
And yay Disney day! Love those posts. Was the cookies and cream macaron any good? I love cookies and cream but idk about macaron form. And one last question: I love your orange sweater you wore to Disney. Where is it from?
As for breakouts I use Pixi glow tonic couple times a week and Thayers witch hazel toner the rest of the days. Hope that helps!

I got the rug on rugsusa.com! Don’t pay full price, they offer sales and discounts all the time.
The cookies and cream macaron was very very very sweet, but I had it with some coffee and if I had a few more friends to share it with it would have been just right. The texture was really nice.
My orange sweater is from Topshop!
I’ve tried the Thayers witch hazel toner, haven’t noticed a difference but maybe I should be more patient…I’ll check out the Pixi glow! Thank you!

oh my god the rug prices are amazing! Thank you!!

You probably don’t remember me and get this kind of comment a lot but we used to be LJ friends back in the a day in my life days…I only posted once though. You’ve inspired me to start blogging again! I was feeling nostalgic and looked up your old user name and found you here! It’s awesome to see you’ve kept at it and you’ve remained so real…Does documenting your days encourage you to do different things/be adventurous?

HI!! Aw, so happy to have been found by another LJ community member.
Good question about documenting days…I find that I choose days that I already have fun plans formed to document. Or, if I have a choice for a few activities or tasks to do over a weekend, for example, I’ll squeeze them into the day I document just because it is motivating to get them done. So…I guess yes and no? Bad answer, I realize…
Thanks for leaving a comment! How are you! Welcome back to blogging. 🙂

I see–I would think it would personally help me to do new things since I have a tendency to do the same thing every day and get stuck in a rut. Also, I’d love to see more watercolor paintings from you! They’re so cute!! I’ve been following you on ig for a minute now. I went to art school too and I find it difficult to stay inspired and following other artists helps. I haven’t been social-mediaing for a few years now and recently decided to get back into it.
I just publicly published my blog today–It’s https://www.moonseed.co if ya wanna take a peep ‘-‘

I think planning a few special things for yourself, even if that is exploring a new neighborhood or place you’ve never been can be a fun way to want to document the day and get that motivation going for sure!
I hope to start painting more once I move, I’ve been a stress ball and painting and puzzles help me and I haven’t done either in a while.
I want to follow your blog! Is it WordPress?

I agree! Although I do enjoy reading your posts about an ordinary day as well. It’s interesting to me what other people are up to when it’s not their highlight reel. I want to document a full day soon but it’s so intimidating. I was thinking maybe a week of polaroids to get started? I have some old film I need to use.
I can’t wait! I enjoy your pottery posts too! Fellow ceramist~ The new place looks great so far! It’s so sweet that your old apartment meant a lot to you. I’m currently living in the first apartment I moved into after college with my boyfriend and looking to move elsewhere. Apartment hunting/moving is taxing.
My blog is on blogger–I think ya gotta do the follow by email thing on the bottom

I was wondering if I should move to wordpress though–is it more user-friendly? I’ve had blogger since 2012?

Can I just drop in and say wordpress is way friendlier and has a much larger community. Google kind of let blogger fall flat.

Yeah, Google stopped updating blogger years ago but it was what I was familiar with. Thanks for the tip! I might move it to WordPress…hmmm

Hi! Sorry for the delayed reply, I’ve been on the go. I switched to WordPress from LJ so I can only say it is MUCH more user friendly than LJ hah.

No worries! I think I’m the worst at getting back to people, especially texting. I played around with WordPress and realized they don’t have an option to tinker with the html which is important to me….and I’m too lazy to move it lol…

@stevieyaaaay on Instagram sells batches of face lotion that’s all natural and has helped immensely with redness and dry skin on my face! I’ve been battling hormonal acne on my face and have yet to find the magic solution to make it go away completely 😦 pure tea tree oil or calamine lotion on breakouts helps too. I’ve heard good things about rose water and witch hazel but also the opposite with how it can cause breakouts or a reaction!

Thank you! I’ll check out @stevieyaaaay. I have some tea tree masks I just got, hopefully that helps. I’ll report back. We can struggle through some face issues together!

Whenever i feel a pimple coming I apply tea tree oil, put a cotton swab in the bottle then add a little water to the swab so its not so strong and dab it. It quickly kills the pimple and helps to heal it… But be careful and experiment first time around if you have sensitive skin.

For your skin issues: do you take the pill? When I was on it I definitely had issues with melasma (dark spots) and other skin related issues.
So, I’ve lived my whole life in MN and have never been to Disney and am sort of fascinated that you go so often. You have a yearly pass, right? Having never been, I’m curious about why you go so much? Is there that much to do/see? When you go do you do the same things every time or mix it up? I’ve never been that interested in Disney but you’re making me more interested! ha!

The only pill I am on is a daily Claritin, I think I need to visit a dermatologist. Not sure what is going on….
I do have a yearly pass to Disneyland. I guess, for me it’s like a physical place that I can go to where I can just ignore my phone, be carefree, forget some responsibilities, and get excited over good company, fun food, and remembering some of my favorite childhood movies and memories. They change up decorations, food, merch, shows, and such every few months or so, so there are actually new things to see sometimes. But for me, it’s just an escape (yes, an expensive one) but I enjoy it.

I like your perspective of going to Disney. I’m really curious about how the rides weave in the stories. Hopefully I’ll get to go with my niece and nephew when they are a bit older.

It’s always so fun to take my little cousins there—seeing magic through their eyes, it can be special. It’s also fun to see them experience the rides you love for the first time…we went together when the littler cousin got to be 40″ tall.

I know exactly what you mean when when you say you’re not feeling your look right now – before I went on Accutane, I haaated my skin. Looking at old pictures from that time takes me right back to the feeling of wanting to like tear my skin off my face. Definitely go see a dermatologist! My suggestion (you may not like it) is Accutane. I’ve been on it twice – once at 19, and again at 24. It is a huge pain in the butt (lots of paperwork and blood tests) but it works! No ~all natural~ mask or serum or whatever has ever worked for me, I needed serious intervention.
