MY WEEK IN PHOTOS: MARCH 19–25, 2018! (HAPA FAMILY DAY, BOARD GAMES, COMICS)
A rainy week in Los Angeles. Starting the Terrace House obsession, visiting Meltdown Comics, a board game reunion, and a weekend spending time with both sides of the family.
Enjoy!
Good morning, happy Monday! Greeting by a gorgeous sunrise.
Wearing red on red and my Museums Are Not Neutral shirt
In Gabby’s part of town this evening
Russ and Ellis both trying to rush out the door as she answers
Gabby gets us some beers and Russ yawns.
We get settled and order some Japanese delivery to join us on our Terrace House journey.
Kiki had been telling me to watch Terrace House for a few months and Gabby insisted we start immediately so we went for it. I am loving it…do you watch?
Tuesday evening, worked pretty late and by the time I got home Zach had attempted my gyoza soup recipe.
Woke up on Wednesday and it was raining! Really not sure who put this ash tray on the balcony, also not sure the last time it was used but I should empty it I guess…
So happy it is raining! I get to wear my raincoat…
A rare day I am not carpooling. Listening to Imaginary Worlds, the episode about the uncanny valley.
Got off the shuttle and there was a little bucket of umbrellas to use to walk across the plaza.
Tristan bought a little milk frother from IKEA and it has revolutionized our office coffee experience.
Taking some UX certification quizzes.
Good morning! Happy Friday. Started the morning downloading my Rome memory cards and organizing files. Sexy.
We went to Hollywood to visit Meltdown Comics, an iconic LA comic book shop and comedy venue closing at the end of the month.
Right by where we parked was a restaurant selling fried chicken sandwiches for lunch and that sounded pretty good.
Maybe it was more of a dinner place, was pretty empty.
Was craving some boba so stopped by Snow Monster in K-town.
You can get cotton candy on a glass lightbulb filled with whatever you want.
I just went for thai tea with boba
Got home and checked on my orchid, and noticed this scary root or vine or something growing from it. I almost cut it off but decided against it
I bought a comic called Spread at Meltdown. Plus we got mystery bags.
Took a little walk to Bevmo to pick out some beers
Every Nickelodean magazine from 2003, a book Zach got at Meltdown
Kiki and Tristan came over then I drove us over to Women’s Center for Creative work
Shoes at the door. Let’s enter.
A peek at iris’s recent show, survival guide: inheritance
Afternoon run, last weekend run before the next 10K I’ve been training for
Got a lot of pimples going on these days
Worked on a little birthday card
Gang is getting together for some board games after quite the hiatus
James only smiles for dumplings
Went to see Zach in his friend’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A Shakespearean production set in post-apocalypic Athens with a heavy DIY vibe. Very charming, funny, and I actually understood what was going on. Maybe because my 5th grade class did a unit on Shakespeare and read A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I read Helena.
My Uncle was in town so we met up with my dad’s side of the family and had breakfast and walked by the ocean.
It is somebody’s 1st birthday!
Such a beautiful evening on the way home.
Hope you had a great week!
Much love friends.
The uncanny valley is super interesting! I listened to a podcast about it earlier this year and I just felt like it made a lot of sense. Also, I feel you on the adult acne… like… can it just stop? The Office Depot/Bevmo combo building is pretty funny looking – it all just looks like office space. That production looked pretty cool!

The uncanny valley episode of Imaginary Worlds talks about video games and how they are really close to closing the uncanny gap. It talks about The Last of Us (a game that Zach just finished playing, and is coming out with a part 2) and also film CGI for like…dead actors who need to be in films or CGI younger versions of actors. So interesting! The office depot/bevmo/sprouts combo is a super depressing building ahah but has good stuff there!

Yes! They’ve been trying to close the gap with some of the Star Wars films. I think they did a really good job there. I will check out that podcast episode. What is the podcast generally about? I haven’t seen The Last of Us, but I remember the podcast I listened to way back talked about how sometimes you just feel “bothered” by a visual and that it’s often because the visuals are just stuck in the uncanny valley! I felt like I had finally figured out why I couldn’t get myself to watch The Polar Express! lol.

Imaginary Worlds is about how we create fictional worlds and why we suspend our disbelief (stolen from the show tagline ha). But it’s a podcast about fantasy, sci-fi, fiction etc. and touches on all kinds of things from moral alignment to special effects to fanfic and more. 🙂

I’m definitely on the Terrace House journey! Still in the Aloha State series, but I’ll go back and start at the Boys and Girls in the City and then move back to the new season….*ahhh* really loving it. Somehow the sad parts are MORE SAD because everybody feels more real than American high drama reality shows.

I absolutely loveee Terrace House! I can’t wait for part 2 of opening new doors to come out. And I highly recommend Boys and Girls in the City, it’s by far the best season yet. How are you finding it so far!
