MY WEEK IN PHOTOS: FEBRUARY 19–25, 2018! (BOWLING, GALBIJJIM, CHERRY BLOSSOMS)
A chilly week in Los Angeles. We go bowling, watch the last of the Olympic games, try a Korean dish for the first time, and Zach breaks his toe and Sufi hurts his back (again). I escape to the Huntington gardens to look for cherry blossoms and have a Sunday sashimi dinner with my parents.
Enjoy!
Good morning from Tweedy who has managed to wedge himself behind a pillow to keep warm.
Tristan is still out of the office, so lonely by myself here.
Coworkers are always impressed when I bring my own lunch, but little do they know it is usually leftovers or a sad bag of salad that looks like this.
Doggos with the Olympics in the background
Zach in charge of making buffalo chicken stuffed bell peppers, sounds weird but tasted pretty good. I’m mostly proud that my unpredictable oven didn’t burn the shiiiit out of these.
Azalea maze at work is blooming!
Meeting Evan and Kate for bowling
Got our bowling shoes and lane ready to go.
We are all not great bowlers. My mom used to be in a bowling league and loves to mock me about how our scores are always so low.
Early carpool and it’s been very cold for Los Angeles standards, like 38 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the mornings which for you Celsius folks (aka the rest of the world hah) that is 3.3 to 4.4 degrees Celsius in the mornings.
I love my woven scarf made by Zach’s sister
Wednesday! There was a pizza deal so Tristy picked up a pizza for a game of thrones evening.
So we’ve been on a slow journey where Tristan watches Game of Thrones for the first time ever. Tonight we’re finishing Season 2! Here’s the #TristyWatchesGoT Twitter thread for the Battle of Blackwater episode.
Thread for the Season 2 finale.
There was a little rain overnight so the morning at the Getty was so beautiful
The light was just amazing and special that morning.
I think I had a question about where I got my backpack, it’s classified as a diaper bag/travel packback but don’t be alarmed. It’s pretty sturdy and I love the top handle and backback design. I use it as a gym back because the inside has material that can be wiped clean. Comes in other colors too! Here’s where I got it on Amazon, it’s by Himawari but I’ve seen other brands with the same bag structure so I know they are out there.
Thursday eve. Dropped our names and order on the list at Sun Nong Dan in Korea Town and headed to grab a drink next door.
Sun Nong Dan!!! We didn’t want to miss our name being called so we stepped back outside to wait responsibly.
The dish they are known for is their galbijjim or korean braised short ribs. It’s really tender beef ribs with potatoes and rice cakes and veggies in a stew-like tomato base. We got ours with cheese and they come torch it for you and IT’S SO worth it.
Olympics were on in the background, and since the Olympics were in PyeongChang and we were in Korea town eating Korean food it was *almost* like we were there.
Watched the final night of women’s figure skating, I was honestly sad to see Evgenia Medvedeva take second. NBC Olympic coverage was really working to build the narrative that she and Alina Zagitova hated each other and were rivals and that Alina is only 15 and “ruining” Evgenia’s chances as being the favorite etc. Something about Evgenia I love, maybe it is her love of Sailor Moon, but I was so sad to see her miss the gold by a few points.
“You have to water your Sufi!” Sufi has been in pain with some back problems again. We put him in the kennel to be sure he wouldn’t jump around and hurt himself more.
Friday morning. It’s my day off and I started the day going to get the second shot for my Hep A vaccine.
I was over in the Pasadena area and thought I’d have some Sarah solo afternoon time. Felt like I’ve been on the computer so much I just wanted to walk around outside.
Hi! I’m at the Huntington Library and Gardens. I’ve never been in the Plant Conservatory at the Huntington. It’s fun! You get to walk through different climates and see what plants are growing.
The Chinese Gardens. They are currently expanding the Chinese Garden but it is still pretty big and so lovely to walk around. I recommend going during the week when it is less crowded.
I assume all pink trees are sakura aka cherry blossom but maybe this one is not
Leaving the Chinese Garden and heading towards the Japanese gardens
Okay…these are cherry blossoms…right?!
Rock garden! The little rocks are meant to look like the ocean and the little rocks are islands.
They have a few tea houses, one from the Buddhist Temple in Pasadena that I used to play basketball at
Today is actually Girl’s Day aka Hinamatsuri! These are hina dolls displayed in celebration of girl’s day.
Wandering around the through the Australian and California gardens
Then over to the desert garden
Hungry. Stopped at a poke bar in South Pas. HUGE portion, pretty good!
Caught the end of the lunch rush
Union Bakery, a South Pasadena classic. I stopped for a coffee and grabbed Zach a cookie.
Squeezed in an appointment with the vet. This is the third time he’s had a back issue, and all of them have been related to a slipped disc in his spine. We know now that he needs steroids to reduce swellings and pain pills so he’s not in pain and pepcid to make sure his tummy isn’t upset.
Poor baby. Got the meds for him now he can start healing!
The mini buns may feel like a fashion statement but really my allergies have been kicked off and my cheeks are itchy so I don’t want my hair to brush on my cheeks.
Mindblown how empty the metro is at rush hour on a Friday.
Walking from the metro to meet Kiki and Ders for happy hour.
A few hours later we decided to hit up Tattle Tale but the cut through a park we usually use was closed so we resorted to scaling a small fence.
Sufiiiii. He’s not feeling well, and I try to let him out of the crate to feel normal for a bit.
Noticed that my orchid has a thinggy growing omg!!! I clipped it to the stand. it’s still alive!
Zach returns from a rehearsal pretty convinced that he’s broken his toe. So icing and elevating.
Yeah, pretty sure he broke his big toe. We leave for a trip next week!
Ordered Indonsian food for delivery. We decided to try Uduk Jakarta, described as a tumeric fried chicken. We also got Kwetiaw Goreng, a wok-fried flat noodle similar to pad see ew. We also got a Nasi Bungkus wrap, curry and rendang with egg, veggies and rice wrapped in a banana leaf. And we got even more rendang on the side. It was m yfirst time ordering from here and WOW THE PORTIONS ARE HUGE so we definitely got way too much. Leftovers for days…
We are dog sitting Bea for a week.
She always likes to be touching you if you’re sitting on the couch, she’s really snuggly.
Brief stop at the mall so I could return some pants I bought online that did not fit. Taco break.
My mom has been keeping some yellowfin tuna that a neighbor gave her for a special occasion.
Yum let’s eat. Sashi, bbq ribs, and moooore. Yuuum.
Stopped at Vroman’s bookshop to pick up another pocket travel guide. Zach and I are going to Rome next week (March 8) for a week. I booked a flight deal last summer and it is finally time to go!
Any offbeat or weird and usual spots to check out in Rome? I’ve been there once before and I’ve seen all the big sightseeing things (Zach hasn’t so we’ll balance) but I’m curious what else you might recommend!
Sorry this post is a bit late—been really busy at a work conference this past week.
Much love friends!
OMG 3-4 Celsius for LA?? That’s so cold!!!
Tristan keeping it funny during GoT marathon 😀
Anddd thanks for sharing where you got your bag! It’s super cute! 🙂
Ahhh Turrell reference!!!
I love Galbijjim 😀
I love Evgenia too! And her Sailor moon routine she’s famous for. Heartbreaking indeed to see her miss the gold by just a few points, but it was also so heartbreaking for the skaters to not even be able to have the Russian anthem played (even tho technically Russia was banned so it’s just Olympic Athletes from Russia). Still very sad 😦
I’m sorry about Sufi 😦
Your solo day inspired me to take a solo day around the city with my camera too 🙂
Sunlight at the metro looks so beautiful 🙂
Look at the portions in your Indonesian food takeout! Wow!!
Bea seems so sweet, aw. 🙂
And look at that Sunday feast!!!
Ahhhhh!!! So excited that you’re going to Rome!!! I can’t really recommend any because I’ve only been there for 2 days and obvi did all the touristy things T_T. Colloseo, Vatican, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, Bocca della Verrata etc. So no useful tips from me except that I’m so excited for your trip???? T_T
Have a GREAT week and trip, Sarah! Can’t wait for your weekly post too 🙂

I recalcuated because I was scared I got it wrong and it’s more like 4-6 Celsius but STILL in the mornings when I’m wearing running shorts it’s very cold ahah.
I hope you have a good solo day! I highly recommend. Bring some headphones and listen to music or a podcast you love. Very relaxing!
I couldn’t believe the size of the portions from the Indonesian restaurant! I’ll definitely order again, they are generous with the size there good for leftovers since I’m lazy about my work lunch.
Hope you have a great week and weekend! Can’t wait to share Rome. AND continue to share from my October trip…next is Hanoi!
