MY WEEK IN PHOTOS: MAY 20–26, 2019!
A behind-the-scenes tour of the kangaroos and Australia section of the San Diego Safari Park, scootering by the beach, egg cups for brunch, and a day of rigorous board games and s’mores.
Enjoy!
Quick breakfast before heading off to work.
The finale of Game of Thrones means it was also the finale of Getty of Thrones, the series I worked on since 2014. Bittersweet.
Gifted to me by the curator I’ve been working with. Thank you, Bryan!
Pottery haul—some sake cups and the attempt at a sake carafe. The shape is still tricky for me.
We looked out the window and out of nowhere there was a cloud approaching. And suddenly, we were inside of a thunder and lightning storm. What’s up with that, LA?
On Friday evening, we carpooled from Los Angeles to Oceanside (outside of San Diego) for the long Memorial Day weekend. We kicked off the weekend with a visit to the San Diego Safari Park.
Elephant on stairs? Can you believe?!
And then it was time for our Australia behind-the-scenes tour, we hopped in our cart with our guide Peggy (missing the other people who signed up for the tour, I guess they decided not to come?)
Baby giraffe in the distance as we headed through the African safari zone and towards the Outback.
The first stop was a space for animal ambassadors aka the animals that are used to people and come out to educational events to teach people about animals and conservation.
We got to meet Adelaide, a red kangaroo. She was getting used to demonstrating jumping for treats. We got to pet her too, so soft.
Tiny sugar glider wahhhh. Zach used to have a sugar glider when he was younger, named Icarus. RIP Icarus.
We drove through the back service roads and ended up by the Zuest Station. This is a southern cassowary, one of the most dangerous birds.
Tree kangaroo! They are endangered because of loss of habitat. 😦
And THEN, we got to actually enter the kangaroo and wallaby enclosure through the back area. We also went into the kitchen to see how the keepers prepare and keep menus for the animals.
Look carefully and you’ll see the baby kangaroo in the pouch
Fed some of the geese before the roos
We were told to let the roos come to us
Cheeky gorilla youths having fun with all the matriarchs
Claps for a great day at the safari park
A quick stop for a snack in La Jolla
Blasted through a diner themed escape room.
We all found ourselves some e-scooters and headed toward the water.
Chasing magic hour up the coast
Everybody showed up for Kiki and my wedding
We found a park with a nice view overlooking the water.
Before the sun totally set we rushed back to where our car was parked.
Dinner at a Spanish tapas place—everything was delicious.
In the morning on Sunday we stopped by the store to get brunch supplies.
Nothing better than a group shuffling together in the kitchen
We went to the Oceanside Pier to rent a surrey bike.
We all changed positions a few times, so everybody contributing to bike power (even though I did the least tbh)
Wandered down the pier, caught an imaginary fish
Treats by the pier before heading back to the Airbnb.
And then the afternoon of board gaming began. Starting with Sonar.
Roasted on the flame of the stove versus baked in the oven
The gaming continues into the wee hours of the night.
