MY WEEK IN PHOTOS: JANUARY 22–28, 2018 (GABBY MOM JEANS, HAND PIES, PARK CITY, 12-HOUR ROAD TRIP)
My work week featured Gabby, hand pies, a day at the Getty Villa, and a slip and fall that left me with a stupid bruise that I thought *might* prevent me from ski lessons. But I made it to Park City, Utah, conquered a blue run, spent time with Zach’s family, and we made it back to Los Angeles after a 12-hour road trip. Beautiful food and landscapes along the way.
Tristan totally mocking me. He likes to correct me when I refer to my scarf and say “Oh you mean your blanket!!”
Made it outside
I sat down, put on Orange is the New Black, and finished up all the photos from my two freelance jobs at once. Sent! Went to bed pretty late but it felt good to get things done.
Waking up for my carpool—it seems so dark in the morning. Packed up my tonkatsu leftovers.
Japanese lacquer box from the new Marie Antoinette mini-exhibition.
Checking out a few manuscripts with a visiting UCLA class for a project.
Tuesday night, headed over to Gabby’s
These monsters were waiting for me
Told Gabby I liked her jeans and she was like, “Thanks! They are literally my mom’s jeans!”
Got to this place with 15 minutes left of happy hour. Perfect.
My perfect Gabby
We each got a gin happy hour drink.
And shared a grilled cheese
Meanwhile, back at her place we decided to watch two episodes of Orange is the New Black and Russ wouldn’t let us have the couch to ourselves.
Wednesday morning! I was working from home in the morning because I was heading to the Villa for work today. Tweedy literally went on this side of my computer and just sat there for a while. Pretty friggin’ cute.
You following me?
As I was rushing around the house to leave, I was by the front door and out the door accidentally wearing my house slippers. I ran back in and grabbed these wool shoes that Zach’s mom kindly gifted me for Christmas. I never look so “sporty” ahah.
Picked up my coworker and we stopped at Pie Hole to bring handpies for lunch.
I got a shepherd’s pie and the peppery meat brought me back to London. Mmmmm.
I’ve come across this three headed dog in the Villa offices more than once but everytime I’m so happy.
Following around some Villa staff to shoot installation footage today.
Haven’t been out here in a while, it’s so lovely.
These shoes are so light and thing I almost felt like I was wearing socks.
Found my coworker again and we headed home.
Home! I did some cleaning.
Walked to meet Tristan at the grocery store but I beat him there so I spent some time in the seasonal “Valentine’s Section” and look they have tiny erasers!!!! And scratch off cards!!! Totally stepped up the game.
Sufi looking STRESSED in Tristan’s arms.
We were laughing so hard about Tristan’s art boy hair that we forgot to check on the pizza and my oven notoriously burns the shit out of everything.
We attempted to watch a few Game of Thrones but we had some wifi issues, a beer spill (my fault), and then a beer-spill-related-slip-and-fall (also my bad) so we finished the night icing my ankle and I felt horrible that our dumb wifi wasn’t working. Dumb problems.
Cozy today, it’s Thursday!
Betty White or Getty White. Yes, it’s true that the color of the walls at the Getty is a specific shade of white called “Getty White”
Leftovers for lunch
Flash forward a few hours: I’m at the airport with a sad airport salad! I’m on my way to Utah to meet Zach who has been there the past week.
Ah, you know you’ve made it to the Utah mountains when the bags of chips are all puffed up.
Happy Friday! Made it to Zach’s dad’s rental and fell asleep right away the night before. Woke up and decided to see what outside looked like!
Hi my face so close
We walked over and across a ski run to a little tiny ticket window.
To get a ski pass for the day you had to be down talking to the ticket booth operator like this, so cute!
Got my pass for later. Zach has slowly been trying to get me to learn to ski. Zach’s family has been so supportive and kind in helping me try and learn skiing. My first time was in 2014 here. 2015, my second time skiing here. Third time here. Skiing last year. I also like looking back and seeing my eczema evolve haha. But really. I am thankful because my family never really went to the mountains, we never did “winter” things (especially living in Southern California), and as much as skiing scares me I’m grateful I get to try it at all! Plus the views are pretty killer.
It was snowing lightly all day and when we came in the night before. But apparently they haven’t been getting a lot of snow.
Ahhh, I love the snow.
Zach’s family left to go skiing, so I hung around and had some lunch…chili!
Then it was time for me to go.
So this was my 5th year skiing (though each year I really only went one or two times, which apparently isn’t enough to learn to get good) and I finally made it down a BLUE RUN!!!! 4 BLUE RUNS to be exact. The “blue” runs are intermediate, but have a range of easy to hard within “blue.” I’ve been mostly skiing “green,” the easy runs till this point. Felt pretty good.
Beautiful trees all lit up
Grilled cheese and chili for dinner, the perfect after-skiing food.
The skiing made my ankle bruise from earlier in the week slightly more angry, but all-in-all still feeling the high from my “blue” run experience. That evening Zach’s cousins came up from Salt Lake and we all hung out till about 2am.
Saturday morning! I decided to wander around and get some fresh air in the morning.
Everybody was asleep or skiing
Are you sick of all the snow pics yet?
Went back to the rental, made some coffee.
Zach’s cousin and I decided to cobble together breakfast with a few random things including these Indomie Mi Goreng instant noodles and avocado toast. I need to find some of these noodles, they were so good and I know they make other flavors.
Zach’s cousin always shows us new board games. This one is called Friese’s Landlord and you have to build apartment complexes and move in tenants and try to tear down or bomb other people’s apartments. Vicious!
For a super late lunch slash early dinner we waited until 3 to get these barbecue slightly spicy wings at this place we try to go to every year.
Shared a trio of fries too, the sweet potato were so salty and delicious.
We hung out more with Zach’s cousins and played another game called Cat in the Sack.
Sunday morning, had to pack up!
We need to get started on our 12 hour journey from Park City, Utah to Los Angeles.
Stopped for snacks and gas
And then proceeded west toward the salt flats. Zach’s cousin told us about the “Loneliest Highway in America” that we could catch west of Salt Lake City. It adds about 80 minutes but apparently is very beautiful and you mostly go through wilderness.
Hadn’t even reached the Lonely Highway yet and things were so beautiful.
Couldn’t help but stop to take a few pictures.
Is that a huge pile of salt?
We also passed this lil’ sculpture in the middle of nowhere.
We kept stopping and wondering, “Are these the salt flats? We know they are nearby…but are *these* the flats?”
“These seem kind of muddy, but maybe the salt flats get a little muddy after it snows?”
Kept driving and then saw this. YEP. BRIGHT SALT FLATS!!!!! The salt was in huge crystals and was super hard.
You can see the salt flats stretching beyond this rest stop
Made it to Nevada! Look…the Peppermill?!?! Like the one we went to in Vegas? Same font?!
Officially made it to the Loneliest Road!
We were on this baby for about 150 miles. We listened to all of Dirty John, the podcast by the LA Times. Pretty fucked up! Here’s episode 1 if you are curious.
Gas! Hallelujah and a gas station full of booze.
The only car on the road it seems
Passed through a town!
Then the rocks got rockier
Closing in on Las Vegas
Magic hour as we arrived in Vegas
Stopped at Mian Sichuan Noodles in Las Vegas’s Chinatown
Spicy black fungus
Zach got the hot and spicy soup with noodles.
Somebody is psyched
Before and after I mixed mine with the sauce. SO. DELICIOUS.
Delicious pork dumplings
With full bellies, we stopped for gas once more and headed the last 4 miles to Los Angeles.
Nearly 5 hours later (there was some strong wind and traffic) we made it back to our apartment. Hoorah!!!! And the best part was that this book I ordered online used finally arrived. I had a memory a week or so ago of this book, it was one of my favorites when I was little. I remember memorizing the kids, their age, their names, the poses they have in the photos….I loved it. So I finally found it online and got myself a used copy. I saw they made a new version in 2016, curious to get my hands on a copy too.
Went to sleep flipping through the book. The best!
Much love friends.
