A DAY IN MY LIFE: AUGUST 13, 2017! (OUTSIDELANDS MUSIC FEST, LORDE, THE WHO)
A DAY IN MY LIFE: AUGUST 13, 2017!
I carried around the Fujifilm X-Pro2 all day and documented a day at Outsidelands Music Festival in San Francisco. We eat Korean BBQ, see Lorde, Solange, The Who and more, and lounge on the grass of Golden Gate Park.
This day was shot with the Fujiflm X-Pro 2 and an 18-55mm XF lens. I rented this kit so I could test out the Fujifilm and see if I’d be interested in purchasing.
What attracted me to the X series?
1) I want a small camera (currently I use a Canon 5D Mark II and it’s heavy, bulky and big)
2) I don’t want to sacrifice manual control or interchangeable lenses
3) I like the color and tone of what I saw of the Fujifilm X series online. Plus they have a fun fuji film simulation you can add to photos.
4) I want this to a camera for travel and being on the go—so the wifi capabilities are a bonus!
5) I like the similiarites to a film body, gives me good feels as a person who does enjoy shooting film as well.
Just wanted to put that out there! Also, just to note, the colors aren’t edited in these photos. I pumped up the contrast in a few, but I did minimal processing just to compare with what I usually do for my documented days with 200+ photos.
Okay, here we go…
Headed to Twitter to keep updated with the Charlottesville Nazi March that had just gone down that Friday. Just…what the fuck honestly.
Rolling around on the air mattress in Lauren’s San Francisco apartment—need to get up and get moving.
Living room scene
Me and the Fujifilm—this is my third day using it, I purposefully brought it this weekend because I knew I’d be out at the music festival and I wanted an “extreme” test to be sure it worked for me. You can see some more photos I took with the camera on my weekly photo post here.
I took the keys and snuck out to get some coffee.
Wearing all of Lauren’s warm clothes (and her shoes) to run out to walk to the bakery.
San Francisco summer—foggy and cold.
Sights in the neighborhood
Hey peace-sign guy! My favorite bakery in Lauren’s area, it’s a Russian bakery that sells sweets and savory treats, along with coffee drinks.
Baked piroshkis—my favorite is the mushroom, but I also love the green onion ones. Mmmm. Drooling looking at this now. Can’t get one today, we’re having a big lunch but…beauties.
I caught Lauren in the reflection, I took this before knowing this was her. She heard me leaving her apartment and followed me out to help me carry back coffees.
Zeen still asleep on the couch when we got back to Lauren’s apartment.
I’ve got some homework to do for my user research experience class, so I suck it up and get down to work.
10:18 am, turned in! *Whew*
We’re all just mulling around the apartment, having our coffees and planning our day at the festival.
My cheeks are struggling with eczema at the moment—the San Francisco weather probably wasn’t helping.
An extra layer today, the day before it was rainy and cold the whole day.
Packing up the bag for the day. We’ve used that backpack I got from Target for the past few years and manage to fit a blanket, charging cables and a block, extra layers, hats, sunglasses…and the water pouch. Pretty good.
Let’s go let’s go, I’m hungry!
Waiting for Zach, let’s go!
Walking through the Inner Richmond
Saw this doggo twice! The day before and today eheh.
Lauren wanted to see Maggie Rogers, I guess Pharrell discovered her during a masterclass at NYU. She’s only 23, and she was so enthusiastic about her festival tours this summer. Very sweet.
Listen along! Apparently this is the song she performed for Pharrell hah.
The last of Maggie Rogers.
We packed up our little area and headed off to the main stage.
Definitely more crowded now.
Lead the way, Jeremy.
Found Andrea sitting with some other friends, and camped out behind them.
Journey to the potties.
As we’re heading back to the main stage camp out zone, I get texts from Mandy.
We attempt to coordinate a meet up.
Mandy not recognizing me
There we go! Heyyy!
Mandy is hungry so I go with her to find some food. She decides on a corn dog.
The food at Outsidelands is always top notch San Francisco area places, so I expect this corndog will be great.
Back to the camp out zone
4:10-5:10 PM—Young the Giant is on.
Folks disperse to get food and return bearing treats. Burritos and brussels sprouts.
Lauren holding down the fort
Another potty break! We need to move closer so its the last chance.
Packed up moving closer in preparation for Lorde.
I feel like we see high Mario every year. And we definitely saw him all three days of the fest this year.
In the flesh
Just throwing Perfect Places in here.
This damn octopus
Part way through her set it starts to mist and drizzle
It’s misty and she stops and sits on the stage and talks about being in dark places and then sings Liability omg.
Just cry it out ok.
She ended with Greenlight.
Most of the crowd leaves for the headliners. We move even closer for The Who.
I make a risky decision to run to pee, I can’t hold it.
Everybody’s favorite pee tunnel
Rushing back to our close spots by the main stage
Have to fight through a crowd of intense Who fans, but we make it.
7:35-9:35 PM—The Who!
They are old but they were working hard.
So we headed out about halfway through the set.
We wanted to catch Solange at a different stage.
Still extremely foggy
Heading over to the first stage we were at earlier this afternoon.
Huge crowd has already formed so we head up to the top of the slope to look over the crowd and stage.
Zach got some fried pickles. Realized we didn’t really eat dinner. I had a few bites of burrito and brussels sprouts earlier…oh well!
8:45–9:35 PM — Solange! My camera was dying at this point, which was good to note for this field test.
We left about 20 minutes early, just to try to beat the exit rush a bit. We still needed to walk back to Lauren’s place and we had a flight that we needed to wake up at 4:00 AM for the next morning.
Washing away the allergens
Getting ready for bed
Degrassi Next Class
Clean and in bed by 10:30! *Ahhh* Long day. Lots of walking. My legs are sore.
Overall, the camera!
1) The size and weight. My neck only was aching a little bit, and I carried it around for like 14 hours a day for three days straight.
2) The quality of photos, especially in the dark! I feel like the color tones are nice in the jpgs, but I’ll need to get used to processing the raws.
1) Placement of some of the buttons, like the lock focus, it’s too far on the right and you can’t do this with one hand
2) Autofocus in general, a little spotty. But I feel like with practice, it’d be okay.
I’m pretty happy with the camera, I just need to make a decision now!
I hope this day wasn’t too boring, as it was a lot of festival pics hah. But a little of San Francisco too.
