A DAY IN CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO

A few hours in Cabo San Lucas, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. We only had a little time, so we saw El Arco and Land’s End and explored the beach.

In early April 2017 I went on a Mexican Riviera cruise with my parents—my cousin works for Princess and my parents truly cannot resist a discount. If you want to see my week in photos during the cruise, check out this post and this post.

In this post I wanted to share the photos I took with my actual DSLR. I posted about the port city, Mazatlan here, and this post will cover Cabo San Lucas. Cabo (at least near the port) is much more touristy than Mazatlan, so I apologize if photos are redundant or repetitive. The light was nice.

Cabo San Lucas or “Cabo” for short is at the tip of Baja California, the strip of land/peninsula that is in Mexico but touching the bottom of California. It’s like Mexico’s pinky finger.

The cruise ship parked out in the bay and then little boats took everybody to the harbor.

My family booked a cruise excursion to see Lands End and El Arco by boat. Then the excursion offered a bus to drive through the city over to Playa El Medano, one of the most popular beaches in the city.

The little boats left really early, like 6am. It was a little brutal to wake up, but so so beautiful!

The harbor was lined with hotels and advertisements for boat tours, scuba tours, snorkeling tours, water sports tours, etc.

A peek at Playa Empacadora. The guide said this is more of a locals beach.

I think this is the famous postcard view of Cabo’s Land’s End. El Arco! Apparently one side of El Arco is the Gulf of California and the other is the Pacific Ocean.

Hello friend! And when we were coming back in we watched a sea lion actually jump onto the back of a fishing boat and the dudes in the boat were just like…cool, hey friend.

My parents are soooo not beach people.

My mom just hung out in the shade and look at how chill she is hahah.

And that’s all I have of Cabo. I wish I could share more, we were only there for a few hours before heading back to the cruise ship.

Apparently people have been living in this area for at least 10,000 years according to archaeological excavations. It makes sense, the area has plenty of fish and and water resources. And it’s frickin’ beautiful!

Cabo became a tourist destination beginning in 1974 when the Mexican government developed more infrastructure to support a tourism market. This meant that a lot of fast development unfortunately hurt the fragile environment and only recently there have been activists working to develop laws to protect the region.

Anywho. A lil’ about Cabo San Lucas!

Much love friends.

  1. These photos are so beautiful! I love the ones of the boats being let down from the cruise ship, and the boats in the harbour at sunrise.

I love hearing about the life places had before they became tourist destinations and started sprouting identikit hotels and bars. We publish a book set in Ibiza before it was the clubbing capital of the world – it’s lovely to read about an aspect of the island’s life that actually still exists but is totally overshadowed by the reputation of Ibiza for partying.

    1. Thank you so much! I was so tired but it was so beautiful outside I couldn’t help myself. Happy you like! 🙂

And I do too! I feel so conflicted when in touristy places. Like hearing about the “locals” beach, one small portion of the bay. At one point the beach and the environment was just *for* locals, and now luxury homes and mansions and hotels and resorts occupy the coastline.
